Sinopse:
Maine, Nova Inglaterra. Frank Fowler é um amável jovem que se formou recentemente na escola secundária e está passando o verão trabalhando como pescador de lagosta, antes de ir para a faculdade no outono. Ele está envolvido com Natalie Strout, uma mulher atraente que é dez anos mais velha e está separada do seu marido, Richard Strout. Entretanto, o divórcio não foi ainda formalmente concluído. Os pais de Frank, Matt Fowler, um médico, e Ruth Fowler, uma professora de música que comanda um coral, desejam o melhor para o único filho deles e vêem com uma certa apreensão Frank viver um romance que não poderá continuar em alguns meses. Mas Matt confia em Frank e o deixa tomar suas decisões, mas Ruth demonstra de forma discreta mais firme as suas objeções. Paralelamente Richard ainda espera ter Natalie de volta e não aceita de forma nenhuma ela estar envolvida com Frank, sendo que logo algo trágico irá acontecer, que afetará os Fowler para sempre.
